Signals

Signals presents the images and words of 30 artists and writers as messages received from a beautiful and strained planet. Organized into elemental chapters – earth, fire, water, wind – the works coalesce around weather events from the devastating to the mundane, offering a collective portrait of reciprocity and communication between self, earth, and environment.

Signals Introduction

What messages are in the weather? How does this omnipresent phenomena make an imprint on the land, our individual and collective memories, our physical bodies, communities?

Atmospheric conditions may be violent and destructive, others are more subtle, gently marking our memories with the smell of wet earth after a rain. This scent becomes a transporting, invisible link to the past. Though these are collective experiences, the intensity by which they affect us varies by circumstance: some of us observe from a distance while others are dangerously entangled.
