Mateo Ruiz Gonzalez: Chilluns’ Croon

Symbolic imagery created based on documents of genealogical and historical interest of Wilson County, North Carolina’s African-American past curated by Lisa Y. Henderson. Concomitantly this body of work reflects on old transcripts from the Federal Writers Project — told by African American former slaves — acting as a compilation of stories that resembled old spiritual beliefs and stories of love and loss from the time of slavery in the United States.

Chilluns’ Croon has been recognized as a finalist for the 2022 Aperture Photo Prize, runner-up for OD Gallery Photo Prize 2022, Finalist of Verzasca Foto Festival 2022, winner of the Urbanautica Institute prize 2021, winner of STORIES 2022 international prize organized by Photo Collective Australia, single image winner of Portrait of Humanity 2022 organized by BJP and shortlisted for Palm Photo Prize 2022 among many others.
